The Keynote shall be given by the Dean of Teaching and Learning of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia, Prof. Teri Balser, Ph.D.  She will speak on The Changing Role of the University: Higher Education and the Modern Need for Lifelong Learning”.  PAES is, indeed, fortunate for having Prof. Balser in ICEE-Phil 2017.  She has won various prestigious awards in her efforts to continuously advance Teaching and Learning in Science and Engineering.  Her efforts are phenomenal, and her achievements, as manifested by her students’ progress, are truly inspirational.  As such, she is one of the most sought after speakers on Teaching and Learning in the world today.  Learn more about our Keynote Speaker, click here.

Prof. Balser will be joined by Assoc. Prof. Iain Murray, Ph.D. who is a Senior Lecturer at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Curtin University.  He is Course Coordinator of Bachelor of Technology (Computer Systems and Networking) and of Electrical and Computer Engineering Double Degrees at the Faculty of Science and Engineering of Curtin University.  He is an award-winning faculty for the innovations he has introduced in teaching-learning and continuous outstanding contributions to student  learning at Curtin.  Thus, his Plenary Talk will be on “The Role of Engineering Educators and Technology in Lifelong Learning”.  One of his pioneering efforts is the establishment of the Cisco Academy for the Vision Impaired (CAVI).  To learn more about his many interesting pursuits in using technology to enhance teaching and learning, please click here or here.

Our Plenary Speaker from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK PolyU), Assoc. Prof. Stephen Chan, Ph.D., is a strong believer of Learning through Service, hence his Plenary Talk on “Lifelong Learning through Service”.  He heads the Office of Service-Learning (OSL) of HK PolyU, which adds to the strength and uniqueness of the University.  Without a doubt, the transformative quality of education that HK PolyU offers is greatly enhanced by OSL.  Therefore, we expect to have the sharing of Dr. Chan to be an incredible experience for ICEE-Phil 2017 participants.  To learn more about the advocacies of Dr. Chan and the thrusts of OSL, click here.

A young and passionate mover of Engineering Education in India will be joining our team of International Plenary Speakers this year at ICEE-Phil, Dr. Yogesh Velankar of the Teaching Learning Centre (TLC) of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Madras.  He will speak not only about “Lifelong Learning through Graduate Education”, but also about his experience in creating enabling platforms for lifelong learning as Senior Advisor at the TLC of IIT-Madras and his other engagements and advocacies.

Our international speakers will be joined by Prof. Maria Natalia R. Dimaano, D.Eng. of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Santo Tomas (UST).  As the current Chair of Division 7 (Engineering and Industrial Research Division) of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), her Talk on “Research as a Means of Cultivating Lifelong Learning” promises to be highly informative.  It is expected to inspire the culture of collaboration among PAES members in pursuing research works that can contribute to national development, and inspiring lifelong learning among Filipino engineers.

Bridging the gap between student training and the skills demanded by professional practice is essential in achieving relevance in education.  Therefore, close collaboration between the Academe and the Industry does not only enhance education, but it also promotes lifelong learning both among students and faculty members.  Dr. Chito Salazar, President of PHINMA Education and of  the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) will be addressing this exciting topic through his Talk, “Industry-Academe Engagement for Lifelong Learning”.
